Summer in London means Masterpiece, one of the landmark events in London’s collecting calendar, which opened last Thursday to the public. As a huge devotee of antiques and art fairs, A-Gent of Style was eager to witness this year’s edition, now in its 7th year, and attended the decorator preview on Wednesday, his enthusiasm hugely enhanced in the last few weeks by the daily build-up on Instagram (where else). Rating Masterpiece as one of his highlights of the London art fair circuit, A-Gent of Style was wowed this year once again by the sheer brilliance and diversity of the elegantly curated vignettes showcasing objets of the highest calibre.

Despite the Brexit and the fall of the pound, exhibitors are remaining optimistic and the fair is showing no sign of abatement as visitors are flocking in. This year’s fair is probably the best so far so make sure you don’t miss it!

Masterpiece London, a true international, cross-collecting fair for art, brings together more than 150 leading exhibitors, old friends and newcomers (A-Gent of Style made once again some great discoveries, and was also delighted to see a few of his most cherished antiques dealers were exhibiting for the first time), from around the world to showcase a superb selection of museum-quality art, antiques, jewellery, furniture and design. The mastermind of this masterpiece, Nazy Vassegh, the delightful and brilliant Chief Executive of Masterpiece says, “The eight days when Masterpiece takes place is the epicenter of the art season in London. After just five years Masterpiece is now firmly regarded as both a leading international art fair and a welcome addition to the summer in London. We are particularly delighted by the exhibitors and partners that will join us for the 2015 edition.”

As in previous years, the range of disciplines is vast, providing something of interest for every visitor. Each item is selected and individually vetted by a committee of independent experts and specialists before the fair begins, which guarantees quality and authenticity is of the highest order alongside fabulous bars and dining such as Scott’s, The Ivy and Le Caprice.

In no particular order of preference (so don’t get jealous, fellas), A-Gent of Style presents today snapshots he took on Wednesday morning of some of the works that dazzled him. Visitors will no doubt relish the chance to acquire such rare pieces or simply enjoy temptation on a grand scale.

A LONDONER IN TANGIER: THE REGIS MILCENT ATELIER

img_8207

Not far from the Mohammed V mosque and within walking distance from his apartment, A-Gent of Style made a great and discovery one afternoon in Tangier this summer as he was strolling back home nonchalantly in the Moroccan heat. By pure happenstance, he came across the boutique-cum-atelier of Régis Milcent, the late, famed French decorator, incongruously situated amongst residential modern blocks of flats, convenience stores, ice cream parlours and cafés.

img_8285

This eponymous atelier is a magical, and unexpected, treasure trove of wonderfully eclectic objets for the home, a cornucopia of selected, unusual antiques amassed and curated over a lifetime from different corners of the world by Régis Milcent, who died a few years ago (it has proved impossible so far to find any information about the decorator perhaps only because the discreet Milcent built his reputation through word of mouth and not publications), mixing European sensibilities with exotic rarities that only a discerning eye or an aesthete would appreciate. It is very similar, in a way, to the Sybil Colefax and John Fowler store at Brook Street, albeit much smaller and in Tangier, in the sense that each area has been curated as a vignette representing a sitting room, a living room or a study for instance. One-off paintings, furniture and rugs brush shoulders with lamps, dishes, ceramics, vases and many other pieces, all beautiful in their own right, and with an incredible collection of original Pierre Frey fabrics that A-Gent of Style was thrilled to discover for the first time; some of them adorn the furniture and walls in the store.

Régis Milcent is not only a shop but mainly a decorative and upholstery company situated at the back of the store, behind the ‘1001 finds’ on display, now run by two delightful men (A-Gent of Style met them only briefly) who worked for many years for Milcent, where they and their team cater for local businesses but also for some of the established international decorators who holiday or have settled in the Tangerine city. Who could blame them. What else do you need!
