THE WONDERS OF ART FROM THE ISLAMIC AND INDIAN WORLDS AT CHRISTIE’S

Christie’s‘ An abundance of riches from the Islamic and Indian worlds will focus on three sales this week celebrating Islamic Art Week. Yesterday’s sale,
Oriental Rugs & Carpets, featured property from exceptional private collections from around the world, including rare 16th C weavings from Egypt, Damascus and Ottoman Turkey. Arts & Textiles of the Islamic & Indian Worlds this Friday will also offer a diverse array of works from across the spectrum of the category.

But it is on the third and remaining sale that A-Gent of Style has decided to focus his attention today. Tomorrow’s auction, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 10 April at 11 a.m and 2.30pm, will cover works of art from across the Islamic world, notably Turkey, Iran and India. A-Gent of Style must come clean straight away and admit that he is a total ignoramus as far as islamic and Indian arts are concerned and you will not find in this feature any form of scholarly or specialist erudition. Christie’s specialists will do a much better job than I could ever do.

The reason for today’s feature was simply for A-Gent of Style to show you his selection of objects from the catalogue which either struck, charmed, surprised or attracted him for no other reason than their  visual impact and for representing a great source of inspiration for interior design projects.

Happy viewing or happy bidding!

Encompassing folios, illustrations, paintings, pottery, rugs, panels, jewellery, ceramics and artillery, here are the objets that A-Gent of Style found compelling for either their aesthetic richness, calligraphic excellence, jewel-like quality, wealth, sophistication, beautiful colour combination, dazzling illumination, quality of execution, peaceful depiction, iconographic or figurative prowess, or purely their spectacular decoration.

If you want to know more information about any piece or its estimate, you can view Christie’s full catalogue here. Exhibitions of the sales are also on show at King Street and Christie’s South Kensington branch.

ALEXIA SINCLAIR’S ‘FROZEN CASTLE’

Fullscreen capture 18032014 084332

One of the world’s premier fine art photographers, Alexia Sinclair, recently completed a most beautiful and challenging photo shoot, ‘A Frozen Tale’, in a Royal Palace outside Stockholm, and takes us on a magical visual journey in this frozen castle, the 350-year old Skokloster Castle, left untouched since the 17th century.

‘A Frozen Tale’ weaves a narrative around some of the famous visitors of Skokloster Slott, such as Queen Christina and Lorenzo Magalotti. Other more obscure figures portray the background scenes of castle life as the ghostly inhabitants caught in quiet moments.

During the Swedish Age of Greatness in the mid 17th century, this majestic castle was built on Lake Mälaren, 80km from Stockholm, and is considered to be one the finest examples of baroque architecture in all of Europe and boasts vast collections of paintings, antiques, tapestries, weaponry and rare books. Queen Christina of Sweden was regularly seen visiting the powerful military commander at Skokloster Slott. Quite remarkably, the preserved interiors have remained untouched for over 300 years. An unmissable destination A-Gent of Style will be sure not to miss when he finally makes it to Stockholm.

A-Gent of Style
particularly enjoyed the anecdote behind this shoot. The Palace got in touch with Sinclair for permission to use one of her photographs in an exhibition about the life of Queen Christina of Sweden. Here’s how that email turned into an all-access-pass to a frozen wonderland:

“It was a very exiting invitation and of course”, recalls Sinclair. “We planned to travel to Sweden to attend the opening of this exhibition at the Royal Palace along with Swedish princesses and aristocracy. What a fairy tale! When I asked if I could photograph one of the princesses, they said “no… but we can give you a castle to do a photo-shoot in!” This is where my latest exciting series ‘A Frozen Tale’ began its journey.”

As an experiment, Sinclair has decided to crowd-fund her next body of work by selling prints of The Cabinets of Curiosity. Usually her prints are reserved for collectors wanting a predetermined limited edition, unfortunately this results in high prices unattainable by the majority of people. This print will be available for purchase for $300 (Australian AUD) until Monday, 14th of April, 2014. N.B. While the edition is limited and a final edition size will be given, the prints do not have print numbers on them. This is because they ship the prints immediately.
