CUBOID CRAZY

Over the past weeks, months or even years, you may have spotted just like me this striking cuboid pattern. It encompasses both contemporary and traditional settings and seems to have appeared mostly on the floor but now in many designs and products around us too.

Did you know that this classic tessellation pattern giving the appearance of 3-dimensional steps and cubes harks back to Greek and Roman times ( it appeared for instance in Pompeii or in St Mark’s Basilica in Venice) and that it isn’t just a brand new, pixellated logo created by the likes of the fashionable shoe and accessory maker Pierre Hardy for instance or even the late interior designer Andrée Putman?

A-Gent of Style has put his Sherlock hat and cape on and here are his finds – some of which are holiday snaps he had forgotten about – on this enigmatic pattern that has infiltrated our design-hungry lives.

ON THE FLOOR:

Post-script – 15/04/13. Did you see in the May edition of the World of Interiors the Pierre Mesguich Mosaïk advert for their San Marco Gold  and Black tile p.120 and also on p.134 the ‘ND101’ hand-painted and glazed lava stone by Made a Mano at Laurence Pidgeon? Just saying…

Post-script – 23/04/13. For those of you in Paris, you may have picked up in the Métro the free copy of A Nous Paris and read yet another article on the cuboid-shaped pattern and its uses. Just saying…

MAK-CAROONS

Another reason to envy my friends in Oz!

MakMak macarons (macaroons if you insist) are handmade in Sydney and sold in their store in King Street using the finest quality ingredients in a range of innovative flavours, colours and textures and are 100% gluten free:

Passionfruit, orange and lemon myrtle / Strawberry, vincotto and pink peppercorn /Peach and raspberry /Caramel macchiato /Pineapple and lime /Bounty / Nutella to name a few.

This autumn (as in their autumn or our non-existent spring), MakMak’s Botanicals collection is inspired by the fragrant herbs, flowers and plants of the natural world. And they’ve added some booze too, only for medicinal purposes of course!!

Blood Orange G&T / Smoked Vanilla & Peanut Praline / Apricot & Elderflower /Rhubarb & Rose etc…

And they sometimes make special editions, for instance for New Year’s Eve or Mardi Gras.

Ladurée eat your heart-shaped macarons out!

I hope MakMak decide to open a store in London soon. Or can this justify a trip to Oz? for the sake of research of course!

Now you can feast your eyes on these lil’ morsels of heaven and pulchritude.

Uh-mazing!
